Cracovia - capítulo 4: Stare Miasto / Cracow - chapter 4: Stare Miasto

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And... who's that man in the main square? what's he doing there? who are these women?... He is Adam Mickiewicz one of the most popular writers, he was a Romantic poet and those women represent: the mother earth, the science, the courage and the poetry. And well, as we all know nazis liked a lot to destroy the things that didn't belong to them, so in 1940 the sculpture was through away but in 1955 it was again in the same place.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The main square and surroundings are the Stare Miasto. If we go out of the main square walking along Florianska street we will get to the gate with the same name. Saint Florian is the firefighters pattern and in the pictures he always appears with a tub of water because the legend says that he was able to extinguish  a fire just with a tub of water!!!!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In Brama Florianska's walls we can normally buy paintings as the ones in the picture.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When we cross Saint Florian's gate we arrive to the barbakan or pan, that's a fortress that was built to protect the city. It was built in only two years! because they thought they would be invaded but the fear was bigger than the threat, as normally, so it wasn't as useful as they expected.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And bordering the old town there is the big park called "planty", in the past it was the moat but the government of the city decided to change that and fill it with grass, trees and so on.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If we continue from barbacan in the way to the train station we will go by the theatre Juliusz Słowacki.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And in front of the theatre there is Coco bar, it seems not special except for this black plaque close to the door, on the right, and that shows the importance of that place.

This plaque is there in recognition of the heroes who belonged to the Jewish Fighting Organization and who carried out several attacks against the Germans, the most famous was the night from 22 to 23 December 1942 in this place, because there was the club "Cyganeria" where they met the Nazis.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And for the next chapter my dear friends we have again a question: what represents the sculpture in the picture below?
                                                                                            TO BE CONTINUED...

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, and after a "little" break, I will come back to the beginnings, Kraków, that means "krak's city" because of the king Krakus, its founder.

So now I'm gonna tell you how is the biggest main square in Europe, Kraków's main square:

In the middle we can find the Cloth Hall (Sukiennice), where long time ago they sold fabrics and this kind of things and now is plenty of souvenirs shops, a little bit expensive but the people say haggling works there, specially they sell amber jewelry.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Next to this place we can find the Town Hall Tower, is the only part of the Town Hall that was not destroyed in 1820.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Then we can see Saint Mary's church (Kościół Mariacki) with two unequal towers, why my dear lovely kids? because as the legend says there were two brothers and they had a very good relationship, the older one was the church builder so he tought his brother how to make it to help him, because he needed help and is very lovely make things with the family, or you haven't see that on the movies? as usual the younger was better than the older so the older got really angry, and envy is so so bad that he killed his own brother!!!

In Saint Mary's Church each hour you can hear a trumpet, and the melody sounds incompletely, why my dear lovely kids? of course its explanation will be by a legend! The legend says that tartars where coming and there was a really brave guy (I'm still waiting to find a legend from Kraków with a really brave LADY, who saves everything?) so he began playing the trumpet to warn everybody and close the city doors, and he saved the city, but!!! an arrow reached him and that's the reason why the melody is incompletely!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And finally, St. Adalbert Church (in polish Kościół sw. Wojciecha) he was a bishop and everybody loved him because he converted a lot of people to Christianity here so he was canonized! and for the end of the tour we also find a face (which was in one of the pictures in my second entry) the author is called Igor Mitoraj sculptor who studied in Krakow and there are sculptures of their faces in many cities, even we can find them in Spain is just begin to search!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And, who is the man in the last picture?

                                                                                                                 CONTINUARÁ...
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
                                                                                                                 TO BE CONTINUED...

Cracovia - capítulo 2 / Kraków - chapter 2: Wawel i Smok Wawelski

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On the Wawel hill, are situated the Royal Castle and Wawel Cathedral, both are symbols of Kraków. The Royal Castle as you can imagine is where the kings and queens lived in Kraków, and the Cathedral is a Polish national shrine, where long time ago the kings where crowned and where most of them are buried.  Also there is buried Lech Kaczynski, which created and creates much controversy.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Cathedral and the Castle are built on.... the dragon cave!!!!

Once upon a time dear boys and girls there was a very very very bad dragon who loved eat people in Krakow! his favourite food was young virgin ladies, so he ate all of them! Except (of course, if not what kind of legend is this one?) the king's daughter. So the king was very very scared, for that reason he announced that his daughter will get married with the person who'll kill the dragon (I'm sure he didn't ask his daughter about that) so a lot of people tried but they failed because the dragon had fire on his mouth! and he killed them all! Then a shoemaker's apprentice whose name was Skuba Dratewka let the dragon a lamb with sulfur inside in the door of his cave, the dragon ate it and he felt so so bad that he began to drink the Vistula river (is the river of Krakow and it's very closed to the dragon's cave) but water wasn't enough so he drank and drank and he.. exploted!!!!!!!! so the shoemaker's apprentice get married with the princess and maybe they were not happy at all together but is better to say they were very very very happy together!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I don't know why but I'm gonna begin the description of this beautiful city writing about the wonderful animals that invade it, and these are my lovely friends... pidgeons (a.k.a. "air-rats"). Pidgeons live freely in Krakow and they move in a very dangerous way, also they are well-liked, because they are a symbol of the city and also they have their own legend. "Once upon a time there was a prince called Harry IV Probus, and as all the princes he liked to control other lands, so he had the great idea of trying to control senores neighbourhood, in the period of the division of the country in neighbourhoods. He wanted to go to Rome with some money to ask for the coronation, so, a witch transformed their knights into pigdeons which pecked the stones of the Saint Mary's church walls and turn them into gold. With this wealth the prince went to Rome, but during the travel he lost everything and never met with the Pope. He came back to Krakow, but his knights never recover into humans." So the pidgeons receive a good behaviour from the people because it's supposed they are Harry IV Probus's knights.
Here you have some pictures from Krakow, the main square and pidgeons!
